1999 Reporting Cycle Closes with Record Number of Reports

The 1999 reporting cycle, which collects information on activities occurring through 1998, has officially closed. The EIA received 188 submissions, a 21 percent increase in participation over last year. This year we welcomed 47 new reporters (see box overleaf). Not only has the number of participants in the program continued to grow each year, but with nine new SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) codes represented, the diversity of industries reporting has also increased. Companies reported for the first time this year included representatives from the food, health, and home furnishing industries, to name a few contributors to the greater diversity. Although non-utility participation continues to grow, the utility industry continues to be the strongest presence, comprising 66 percent of reporting entities.

Also during this reporting cycle, mergers and name changes have affected several of our reporters. Among the familiar entities with new names are: Ameren Corporation (formerly Union Electric Company and Central Illinois Public Service Company), FirstEnergy Corporation (formerly Centerior Energy Corporation and Ohio Edison Company), Alliant Energy (formerly Wisconsin Power & Light and IES Utilities Inc.), Keyspan Energy (formerly Long Island Lighting Company, Long Island Power Authority, and Brooklyn Union Gas Company),

Reliant Energy (formerly Houston Lighting & Power Company) and BP Amoco (formerly BP America and Amoco). Several other reporters have been involved in mergers that may result in consolidated reports next year: Cooperative Power Association and United Power (Great River Energy) and Delmarva Power and Atlantic Energy, Inc. (Conectiv Power Delivery). Also Western Resources, Inc. recently purchased Kansas City Power and Light Company.

We have completed a preliminary analysis of the approximately 1,500 projects reported this year. The emissions reductions and carbon sequestration reported for these projects totaled about 250 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent for 1998, an increase of about 50 percent over the total reported last year for 1997.

Activities involving the generation, transmission, distribution, and cogeneration of electricity continue to be the most common types of project reported; however, energy end use and carbon sequestration projects are strong second place contenders.

June 1, 2000 Deadline for Reporting

Mark your calendars! The closing date for submitting reports containing data on activities through 1999 for inclusion in the 2000 version of the Public Use Database is June 1, 2000. Forms will be mailed out early next year.

New Recycling Worksheet

We found an error in the Excel spreadsheet version of our recycling worksheet. We had mislabeled the columns in the emission reductions table. This problem has been corrected and you can download the new and improved spreadsheet (recycle.xls) from our FTP site at http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oiaf/1605/cdrom/pdf/. This spreadsheet automatically calculates emission reductions from the quantities of recycled materials entered by the user.

Also available at this site is an Adobe Acrobat version of this worksheet (recycle.pdf), which includes more background information and a discussion of methodology. (However, calculations must be done manually on a printed copy).

Welcome New Reporters!

This year's reporting cycle saw the addition of a record 47 first-time reporters. Welcome and thanks for participating in the Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Program.

Climate Wise Partners Drive Increase in Reporting of Energy End Use Activities

A rise in reporting by Climate Wise Partners has helped drive the total number of Energy End Use projects reported from 273 for 1997 to 353 for 1998, an increase of 29 percent (see figure). Non-utilities were largely responsible for this net increase of 80 projects.

Of 14 first-time non-utility reporters that reported energy end use projects in 1998, 12 are Climate Wise partners. These new reporters accounted for 56 of the 70 new projects reported by non-utilities. Twenty-one of these projects were included in separate reports by three California Portland Cement Company plants. Others reporting new energy end use projects include Abe Krasne Home Furnishings, Allergan, Dade Behring, Engelhard, Essential Foods, Imperial Plating, Industrial Equipment & Supplies, Pintexs, and Pan American.
