Update of Appendix Tables from Privatization and the Globalization of Energy Markets

Explanatory Notes

The company-venture tables in the appendix of Privatization and the Globalization of Energy Markets (published in October 1996) were updated during June 2000. The tables are in Microsoft Excel for Office 97 format (other file formats are available upon request) and may be downloaded using links at the bottom of this document. The tables contain summary information for worldwide energy investments by U.S. and foreign companies, most of which was prompted by energy privatization in the associated country. A key for the investment abbreviations used in the spreadsheets is provided at the end of these explanatory notes.

The focus of the appendix remains on the companies making the investments, not the countries in which the investments are made. Readers who wish to focus on countries rather than on companies are assisted by separate groupings of the countries as follows: OECD countries, Latin American (including the Caribbean region) countries, Middle Eastern countries, socialist and formerly socialist countries of eastern and central Europe, Asian countries, and African countries.

Companies with at least one energy investment (or prospect) are listed along the top of each table; countries with at least one recently privatized energy industry are listed along the left side of each table. The country of incorporation is listed above the company name. Additional company-specific information is listed below the company name. This information includes: the primary SIC code of the company (if known), parent/subsidiary/affiliate companies (if any, and if the company was included in the original appendix tables), and the latest annual report for the company if the company's annual report was used as a source of investment information.

The reader should note that lower case abbreviations indicate investment prospects and upper case abbreviations indicate actual invesment commitments. Additionally, a few abbreviations are preceeded by a parenthetical minus/negative sign, which indicates the sale of an investment asset, or the abandonment of an investment prospect.

The following examples illustrate the use of the abbreviations employed in this appendix.

Example 1. According to their 1999 annual report Alberta Energy Co. Ltd. (Alberta Energy), a Canadian crude oil and natural gas extraction company (SIC code 1311) has drilling rights (DR) and provides drilling services (DS) in Australia. Alberta Energy has oil and gas exploration (E) and development (D) projects in Argentina in addition to a marketing prospect (m). Alberta Energy is engaging in seismic work (SW) in Colombia, oil and gas exploration and production (P) and an oil pipeline (OP) in Ecuador. Alberta Energy also has drilling rights, is exploring for oil and gas, and conducting seismic work in Azerbaijan.

Example 2. Alliant Energy Corp., a U.S. electric and other services company (SIC code 4931), has investments in natural gas distribution (GD) and electric power distribution (EPD) in New Zealand. Additionally, Alliant Energy has invested in electric power transmission (EPT) in Brazil and in a coal-fired power generation joint venture (jv-CFP) in China.

Although lengths were taken to be comprehensive, only the companies that were present in the original appendix tables were examined to ascertain the current state of their energy investments that are apparently motivated by energy privatizations. Thus, the list of included companies is not exhaustive and the included companies are termed "selected companies."

The speadsheet file containing updated investment information may be downloaded in its entirety, or in smaller regional files. (File size is indicated in parentheses.)
