First Energy Consumption Estimates from MECS 2006

Released May 2009

Preliminary estimates for the 2006 MECS fuel tables are shown below. These estimates measure the energy used for heat, power, and electricity generation, regardless of where the energy was produced. They are summarized at the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 3-digit level for the U.S. We will be updating the website in the coming weeks with more tables and updating the preliminary estimates, if necessary.

Relative standard errors (RSEs) are included as a separate tab in the spreadsheet version of the table.

(a) The Bureau of the Census classifies establishments using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
(b) 'Net Electricity' is obtained by summing purchases, transfers in, and generation from noncombustible renewable resources, minus quantities sold and transferred out. It does not include electricity inputs from onsite cogeneration or generation from combustible fuels because that energy has already been included as generating fuel (for example, coal).
(c) 'Distillate Fuel Oil' includes Nos. 1, 2, and 4 fuel oils and Nos. 1, 2, and 4 diesel fuels.
(d) 'Natural Gas' includes natural gas obtained from utilities, local distribution companies, and any other supplier(s), such as independent gas producers, gas brokers, marketers, and any marketing subsidiaries of utilities.
(e) Examples of Liquefied Petroleum Gases '(LPG)' are ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, normal butane, butylene, ethane-propane mixtures, propane-butane mixtures, and isobutene produced at refineries or natural gas processing plants, including plants that fractionate raw Natural Gas Liquids '(NGL).
(f) 'Other' includes net steam (the sum of purchases, generation from renewables, and net transfers), and other energy that respondents indicated was used to produce heat and power.
* Estimate less than 0.5. W=Withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual establishments.
Q=Withheld because Relative Standard Error is greater than 50 percent.
NA=Not available.
