The steel industry produced 112 million tons of raw steel in 2000. Almost sixty million tons were produced in basic oxygen furnaces and 53 million tons in electric arc furnaces. This included 100 million tons of carbon steel, 5 million tons of alloy steel, and about 2 million tons of stainless steel.
