Labor productivity in the glass industry has increased substantially over the past decade, rising between 27% and 53% depending on the sector. [BLS 1996] About 88% of glass employees are production workers, earning an average of $16.14 an hour in 2001. [DOC 2001] However, the industry is using less labor than it has in the past, and computer control of operations is more prevalent throughout the industry.
