State-Level Information
Most of the forest products industries are concentrated in the northwest, midwest, and southeast, where forest resources are available and accessible. Oregon, California, and Washington account for over 20% of the 1999 lumber and wood total U.S. shipments, while the top two southern lumber producers, Texas and Georgia, make up approximately 11%. Pulp and paper shipments from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania account for 15% of the U.S. total, and the leading southern paper-producing states, Georgia and Alabama, account for just under 10%. Overall, the top eight states accounted for 41% of the total shipments and about 38% of total employment. [DOC 2001b]
