In 2001, the total production of the top 100 chemicals amounted to 471 million tons, down from 502 million tons in 1990. The top five basic chemicals include sulfuric acid, nitrogen, ethylene, oxygen, and lime. The production volume of all chemicals products totals almost 1.2 billion tons. [ACC 2002]
