A number of general technologies can contribute to increased efficiency and productivity in manufacturing. These include computer control of building environment, computer control of processes or major energy-using equipment, waste heat recovery, and adjustable-speed motors. Most frequently cited in the aluminum industry are the use of computer control of processes or major energy-using equipment (about 27%) and the use of adjustable-speed motors (36%). [MECS 1998]
