The steel industry produced 108 million tons of raw steel in 1998. Sixty million tons were produced in basic oxygen furnaces and 50 million tons in electric arc furnaces. This included 97 million tons of carbon steel, 9 million tons of alloy steel, and about 2 million tons of stainless steel. Major steel mill products are sheet, bars, rods, plate, structural shapes, and strip. [AISI 1999a]
