A number of general technologies can contribute to
increased efficiency and productivity in manufacturing. These include adjustable-speed
motors, computer control of processes or major energy-using equipment, computer control of
building environments, and waste heat recovery. About 54% of U.S. metalcasting industry
establishments (SIC 3321 only) reported using one or more of these technologies in 1994.
Most frequently cited in the industry is the use of adjustable-speed motors (about 35%). [MECS 1994]
