Energy costs do not vary substantially across glass sectors, usually accounting for 8-12% of production costs, except in the less energy-intensive products segment. In 1997, the industry spent about $1.4 billion on energy. While natural gas accounts for the largest expenditure, electricity is substantially more expensive on a per-Btu basis. [DOC 1997]
