A number of generic technologies can contribute to
increased efficiency and productivity in manufacturing. These include computer control of
building environments, computer control of processes or major energy-using equipment,
waste-heat recovery, and adjustable-speed motors. Just over 7,000 facilities reported
using one or more general technologies; however, 20,055 facilities reported using none. Of
the technologies used, adjustable-speed motors was the most frequently cited. [MECS 1994]
