Most of the forest products industries are concentrated
in the northwest, midwest, and southeast, where forest resources are available and
accessible. Oregon, California, and Washington account for over 23% of the 1996 lumber and
wood total U.S. shipments, while the top two southern lumber producers, Texas and Georgia,
make up approximately 11%. Pulp and paper shipments from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania
account for 14% of the U.S. total, and the leading southern paper-producing states,
Georgia and Alabama, account for over 10%. Overall, the top eight states accounted for 42%
of the total shipments and about 38% of total employment. [DOC 1996]
