According to industry data compiled by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), total pulp and paper industry energy intensity (total energy use per ton of production) has gone from 33 million Btu/ton in 1972 to 26 million Btu/ton in 1997. During this time, the industry has increased self-generated energy consumption by close to 38% and decreased its reliance on fossil fuels and purchased power. Since 1972, the industry has reduced the average use of fossil fuels and purchased energy per ton of output from 19.1 million Btu to 11.5 million Btu in 1997. [AF&PA 1997]
