Over 48% of the electricity used by the pulp and paper
industry is generated onsite, primarily by means of cogeneration. The pulp and paper
industry is the largest cogenerator in the manufacturing sector, producing more than 50.9
billion kilowatthours using cogeneration technologies. The primary technology used is
steam turbines supplied by bed boilers, and many are fueled at least partially by biomass.
Typically, these systems generate high-pressure, high-temperature steam for use first in
electric power turbines and then in process applications. The lumber and wood products
sector also cogenerates electricity but only about 9% of the industrys total net
electricity demand, or 1.9 billion kilowatthours. [MECS 1994]
