The chemical industry continues to be a strong contributor to the U.S. economy, with shipments increasing more than 5% every year over the last decade. The composition of the industry has changed, however, with increasing emphasis being placed on high-technology fields (pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, advanced materials). Pharmaceuticals is the highest valued sector (24% of shipments), followed by organic chemicals (21%) and plastics (16%). [CMA 1998]
