The aluminum industry used an estimated 727 trillion Btu
of energy in 1994 (including electricity losses). Electricity represents nearly 85% of the
industry's energy consumption, most of which is used during the electrolysis of alumina.
Natural gas accounts for most of the remainder. Carbon anodes made from petroleum coke and
pitch are feedstocks to the electrolytic process. [MECS 1994]
