International Petroleum Monthly (IPM)

Appendix D. Estimation Procedures

Estimation procedures are used for petroleum demand numbers in many of the countries outside of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in cases where data from EIA's International Energy Annual are not yet available. Annual petroleum demand data for 2006 and earlier years, for all Non-OECD countries, may be found in Table 1.2 of EIA's International Energy Annual 2006, released on December 8, 2008. The status of the demand numbers shown in Table 1.7, Table 2.1, and Table 2.4 of this current International Petroleum Monthly may be summarized as follows:

(1) petroleum demand data for the United States and the U.S. Territories are from the Energy Information Administration.

(2) petroleum demand data for non-United States OECD countries are from the International Energy Agency.

(3) for countries outside of the OECD, the following approach is used. The annual numbers for 1997-2006 match the demand numbers in Table 1.2 of the International Energy Annual 2006 . The quarterly and annual numbers for 2007 forward are the best available EIA estimates, based upon the best annual and quarterly data currently available, analytic judgment about current trends, and some seasonal adjustments. These are usually the same numbers that appear in the spreadsheet World Petroleum Consumption, Most Recent Annual Estimates and/or in Table 3a of EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook .
