Aspects of the Merger of the Exxon and Mobil Corporations

On December 1, 1998 The Wall Street Journal announced that Exxon Corporation and Mobil Corporation had agreed to merge.   The value of the transaction was estimated as $80 billion as Exxon agreed to exchange 1.32015 shares of Exxon stock for each outstanding share of Mobil stock.   Exxon is effectively paying $99 for each outstanding share of Mobil stock, given the closing prices of the companies' stock when the deal was announced.
