a Neither Valero, nor UDS has any branded outlets in PAD District I.
a The most recent information reported by UDS to the National Petroleum News (NPN) that includes more than company-operated outlets is for the year 1997. The 1997 values are adjusted to reflect sales of outlets mentioned in UDS' 1999 and 2000 annual reports. The 1997 NPN data are further adjusted to reflect the states listed in the 2000 Annual Report (pdf format) of UDS. The resulting company total of 4,456 is also reported in the U.S. Motor Gasoline Retail Outlet Totals table. Valero had no retail operations until it acquired the Benicia, California from Exxon Mobil in May 2000. Press releases (e.g., "Valero to Acquire ExxonMobil's Benicia Refinery and 340 Related Retail Outlets; Acquisition Marks Valero's Entry Into Retail Operations") indicate that 340 branded outlets in California were the extent of Valero's domestic motor gasoline retailing presence.
