Understanding Historical Changes in the U.S. Refining Industry
The U.S. refining industry has changed dramatically in the past twenty years. The following table (focusing on those companies that own the majority of U.S. refining capacity) presents an historical perspective to elucidate recent changes in the industry. The table shows two snapshots of the U.S. refining industry, the first in 1982 and the second in 2002. Notes included in the table provide insight into how the companies existing in 2002 were formed (i.e., what companies they acquired and when). The data used to construct the historical change table were all collected by the Energy Information Administration and published in the Petroleum Supply Annual (PSA), Volume 1 for the years 1982 and 2000. These data were augmented by recently issued press releases from the companies included in the table to account for acquisitions and divestitures that occurred since the most recent PSA data were published.
