Company-level motor gasoline retail outlet data by state are available in the State-level Detail Table. The information is taken from the National Petroleum News (NPN). The company totals represent year-end 1999 values. However, the state totals are collected in the first quarter of each year. Thus, year 2000 state totals are used as proxies for year-end 1999 state totals.

Although the Energy Information Administration does collect company-level retail outlet information, it is proprietary data and can only be disclosed in aggregates sufficiently large to prevent disclosure of the company-level information. Consequently, information collected by the National Petroleum News and published in its annual Market Facts is used for this table and the State-level Detail Table
