Energy-Related
Carbon Emissions for Selected Iron and Steel Industries, 1994.
Besides steel mills and blast furnaces, the primary metals industry also
includes the aluminum industry, copper industry, and other metal industries.
Within this group, the iron and steel industry emits over 60 percent of
the energy-related carbon. Energy-Related
Carbon Emissions for the Iron and Steel Industry by Source, 1994.
Coal accounts for almost 60 percent of the energy-related carbon emissions
in the iron and steel industry. Electricity and natural gas use emits
an additional 35 percent of the energy-related carbon. Almost all of the
coal is converted to coke for the manufacture of steel, rather than used
directly as a source of fuel.
