Data on Frequency of Use

The 1981 Residential Energy Consumption Survey was the first survey in which the respondents were asked to describe how often they used their air-conditioning equipment during the summer. The possible answers were:
  • Not used at all
  • Turned on only a few days or nights when really needed
  • Turned on quite a bit
  • Turned on just about all summer long
Some households had recently moved into the homes and were not able to answer the question. Additional cases with missing data resulted when respondents did not know or did not answer, or when the interviewer skipped the question. For the 1978 through 1990 residential surveys, the missing data on air-conditioning usage were not imputed for nonresponse.
