OFFICE
BUILDINGS
Who owns and occupies them? Government vs. Nongovernment Only 8 percent of office buildings are government-owned and most of these are owned by local governments.
Government-owned office buildings are larger than nongovernment-owned office buildings (an average of 23.6 thousand square feet per building vs. 14.1 thousand square feet per building). Owner Occupied vs. Nonowner Occupied Buildings that are "owner occupied" are those where the owner or the owner's business is present in the building. For example, an office center that is entirely rented out to individual businesses would not be considered to be owner occupied. Of the 650 thousand nongovernment office buildings, 83 percent are owner occupied. Most government office buildings are owner occupied (94 percent).
Nonowner occupied office buildings are larger than owner occupied office buildings (21.1 thousand square feet per building vs. 13.7 thousand square feet per building).
