HEALTH
CARE BUILDINGS
Who owns and occupies them? Owner Occupied vs. Nonowner Occupied
Buildings that are "owner occupied" are those where the owner or the owner's business is present in the building. For example, a medical center that is entirely rented out to individual practices would not be considered to be owner occupied. Inpatient health care buildings are much more likely to be owner occupied than are outpatient health care buildings. Of health care buildings as a whole, 73 percent are owner occupied. Government vs. Nongovernment Only 18 percent of all health care buildings are government-owned (only 1 percent by the Federal government). There are not enough government-owned health care buildings to draw any statistically valid conclusions about the number of State or local government-owned health care buildings or about the number of inpatient or outpatient health care buildings that are government-owned.
