Food Sales

Food sales buildings are buildings that are used for retail or wholesale sale of food.

Food Sales Buildings...

  • The majority of food sales buildings were convenience stores, which is why almost 80 percent of food sales buildings were less than 5,000 square feet.
  • Sixty-five percent of food sales buildings were constructed since 1970; almost 30 percent were built in the 1990's.
  • Slightly more than three-fourths of food sales buildings were occupied by the owner.

Activity Subcategories

Building respondents who reported that their building was a food sales building were then asked to place the building into the following more specific categories:

  • a grocery store or food market
  • a gas station with a convenience store
  • a convenience store
  • some other type of food sales building

There were enough buildings in the responding sample to report statistics for the grocery store/food market category. However, there were so few other types of food sales buildings that the combined category of other food sales buildings contains almost entirely convenience stores or convenience stores with gas stations. Because convenience stores tend to be small buildings, they comprised a large number of food sales buildings, but a smaller portion of the floorspace.

Energy Use

Food sales buildings used 201 trillion Btu of total energy, which was 4 percent of the total energy consumption for all commercial buildings, though they comprised only 1 percent of commercial floorspace. Their total energy intensity was the third highest of all the building types, and their electricity intensity was the highest. Electricity was the overwhelming energy source used in food sales buildings.

The total energy consumption data in the figures and tables above are “site energy,” which includes only the amount of electricity consumed within the building; energy use can also be expressed as “primary energy,” which includes the energy consumed during the generation and transmission of electricity. Food sales buildings used 498 trillion Btu of primary electricity, so their total primary energy consumption was 534 trillion Btu, or 4 percent of total primary consumption for all commercial buildings.
