Equipment and Commercial Food Preparation in Food Sales Buildings
There
were enough buildings in the responding sample to report statistics for
the grocery store/food market category. However, there were so few other
types of food sales buildings that the combined category of other food
sales buildings contains almost entirely convenience stores or convenience
stores with gas stations. Because convenience stores tend to be small
buildings, they comprised a large number of food sales buildings, but
a smaller portion of the floorspace.
The total energy consumption data in the figures and tables above are “site energy,” which includes only the amount of electricity consumed within the building; energy use can also be expressed as “primary energy,” which includes the energy consumed during the generation and transmission of electricity. Food sales buildings used 498 trillion Btu of primary electricity, so their total primary energy consumption was 534 trillion Btu, or 4 percent of total primary consumption for all commercial buildings.
