Total Floorspace by Building Type

  • There was approximately 67.3 billion square feet of commercial floorspace in the U.S. in 1999.
  • Because there are many of them, office buildings comprised the largest amount of commercial floorspace.

Square Feet per Building by Building Type

  • Inpatient health buildings were by far the largest building type, on average, while food service and food sales buildings were the smallest.
