Total Employees by Building Type
  • There were approximately 81.9 million total employees working during the main shift in U.S. commercial buildings in 1999.
  • Office buildings had nearly three times as many total main shift employees as the building type with the next highest number of total workers—mercantile buildings.

Employees per Building by Building Type

  • Inpatient health care buildings averaged six times more employees per building than any other building type.

  • Outpatient health care and office buildings were the most employee-intensive building activities (i.e. they had the least square feet per employee).
