Energy End Uses

The amount of floorspace in commercial buildings with major end uses ranged from 64.1 billion square feet for lighting to 3.1 billion square feet for manufacturing (Figure 1). Floorspace served by three end uses—lighting, space heating, and cooling—was further refined because CBECS collected information on the amount of floorspace within buildings devoted to each of those end uses. For buildings with lighting, 86 percent that floorspace was actually lit (i.e., 54.7 billion of the total of 64.1 billion square feet). The corresponding percentages for space heating and cooling were 87 percent and 73 percent, respectively.
