Principal Building ActivityThe amount of commercial floorspace and number of commercial buildings by principal building activity are shown below (Figures 5 and 6). Four building activities—office, mercantile, warehouse and storage, and education—greatly exceeded other activities in floorspace; they comprised 43.4 billion square feet or 60% of the 71.7 billion square feet of total commercial floorspace. Those four activities represented a smaller fraction of total buildings; 2.5 million or 51% of the 4.9 million commercial buildings in the U.S. Figure 5.
