Natural Gas Supplier Fleets
The Natural Gas Supplier Fleet Survey collected information regarding the fleets and fleet
vehicles operated by natural gas suppliers throughout the United States as of the end of
1993.
Some highlights are:
- At the end of 1993. natural gas suppliers with fleets of 10 or more vehicles operated a
total of 138,324 fleet vehicles.
- Approximately 12 percent of the vehicles operated by natural gas suppliers were
alternative-fuel vehicles (AFV):
- About 90 percent of the AFV's were converted vehicles ( i.e., vehicles converted from
conventional fuels to alternative fuels).
- 81 percent of the AFV's were dedicated vehicles.
- 29 percent of the new vehicles planned for service in 1994 were AFV's.
- 72 percent of the vehicles operated were centrally fueled at a company-owned site.
- 92 percent of the vehicles operated travel 100 miles per day or less.
- Fleet vehicles are replaced or retired, on average, every 6 years.
- Three-fourths of the fleet vehicles were not available to employees for uses other than
business.
- Multifuel AFV's tended to operate on alternative fuels as opposed to gasoline or diesel.
