Data for: 2006
Release Date: May 16, 2007 Next Release: May 16, 2008 Uranium Purchases and Prices
Owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors purchased a total of 67 million pounds U3O8e (uranium oxide equivalent) of deliveries from U.S. and foreign suppliers during 2006. The weighted-average price paid was $18.61 per pound U3O8e, an increase of 30 percent compared with the 2005 price. Approximately 16 percent of all uranium purchased was U.S.-origin at an average price of $17.85 per pound U3O8e. Foreign-origin uranium accounted for 56 million pounds (84 percent) of the deliveries at an average price of $18.75 per pound. Owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors purchased uranium with 2006 deliveries from 21 suppliers[1]. During 2006, 10 percent of the purchased uranium involved spot contracts, and the remaining 90 percent involved long-term contracts. The average price for spot contracts was $39.48 per pound, but for long-term contracts it was $16.38 per pound U3O8e. Long-term contracts include those with one or more deliveries a year following contract execution (signed date) and as such may reflect some agreements of short and medium terms as well as longer term. 1994-2006 Data:

New and Future Uranium
For 26 new purchase contracts signed in 2006, consisting of 23 new spot contracts and 3 new long-term contracts, the quantity of uranium delivered in 2006 was 6 million pounds U3O8e and the average price was $43.77 per pound. As of the end of 2006, cumulative unfilled uranium requirements for U.S. civilian nuclear reactors for 2007 through 2016 were reported to be 276 million pounds U3O8e. The quantity of maximum deliveries of uranium for the same period under existing purchase contracts totaled 204 million pounds. These contracted deliveries and unfilled requirements combined represent the maximum anticipated market requirements for uranium. The total 10-year maximum requirements, as of year-end of 2006, were 480 million pounds U3O8e. 2006-2016 Data:
Uranium Feed, Enrichment Services, Fuel Assemblies Loaded
In 2006, owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors delivered 57 million pounds U3O8e of natural uranium feed to U.S. and foreign enrichers. In addition, 13 million separative work units (SWU) were purchased under enrichment services contracts from 5 sellers in 2006[2]. Reported for the first time, the average price for the 13 million SWU was $106.57 per SWU purchased by the owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors. The U.S.-origin SWU share was 12 percent and foreign-origin SWU accounted for the remaining 88 percent. Uranium in fuel assemblies loaded into U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors during 2006 contained 51.5 million pounds U3O8e. 1994-2006 Data:

Uranium Foreign Purchases/Sales and Inventories
U.S. suppliers (brokers, converters, enrichers, fabricators, producers, and traders) and owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors purchase uranium each year from foreign suppliers. Foreign purchases totaled 65 million pounds U3O8e in 2006, and the average price was $19.31 per pound, which was 30 percent more than in 2005. Also, the U.S. government, U.S. suppliers, and owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors sold uranium to foreign suppliers. Foreign sales totaled 19 million pounds U3O8e in 2006, and the average price was $32.87 per pound (59 percent higher than the 2005 price). Year-end commercial uranium inventories represent ownership of uranium in different stages of the nuclear fuel cycle (in-process for conversion, enrichment, or fabrication) at domestic or foreign nuclear fuel facilities. Commercial uranium inventories owned at the end of the year by owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors in 2006 was 78 million pounds U3O8e, an increase of 21 percent from year-end 2005. Overall, U.S. commercial inventories (including inventories owned by U.S. brokers, converters, enrichers, fabricators, producers, and traders) totaled 107 million pounds as of the end of 2006. 1994-2006 Data:
