CANDU
Reactors
CANDU is the registered trade name for the Canada Deuterium Uranium reactor
designed by Atomic Energy of Canada, Limited (AECL). All CANDU models are
pressurized heavy-water cooled reactors (PHWR). There are 15 CANDU reactors
on line in Canada (as of October 20, 2003). CANDU reactors have been built
in five other countries: Argentina, China, India, Romania, and South Korea.
The CANDUs that are either on line, under construction, or might be re-started
are identified in Table 1. In addition, Table 2 identifies 18 reactors based
on the CANDU technology.
