NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC) ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF APPLICATION FOR EARLY SITE PERMIT AT NORTH ANNA NUCLEAR PLANT LOCATION

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is announcing the availability of an application from Dominion Nuclear North Anna, LLC, for an early site permit for the North Anna nuclear power plant site, near Mineral, Virginia. Virginia Electric & Power Co., a subsidiary of Dominion Energy, Inc., currently operates two nuclear reactors at the site.

In April the NRC held two public meetings in Mineral to discuss the early site permit review process. If an early site permit were granted, it would allow the site to be used for one or more new nuclear reactors...

The North Anna early site permit application is available electronically at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html -- enter ML032731517 as the search term. A copy of the application is also available for public review at the NRC Public Document Room, located at 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland; telephone: 800/397-4209 or 301/415-4737.

Virginia Nuclear Highlights

In 2008, the State of Virginia ranked 14th in nuclear capacity and 14th in nuclear generation. Monthly and cumulative nuclear generation and annual nuclear capacity for each State and each reactor is reported in a table elsewhere on this site.

In 2007, coal accounted for nearly half of the electricity generated by the State. The percentage of electricity generated by coal, gas, nuclear, and hydropower for each state with at least one commercial reactor is reported in the Electricity Market table.

License Renewal

On March 20, 2003, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued renewed licenses to both of Virginia's power plants:  North Anna and Surry.

Information on the current status of all license renewal applications appears on the NRC web site at http://www.nrc.gov .  To locate the data, select "index,"then select the letter "l"and click on "License Renewal."

Air Quality in Virginia

Total greenhouse emissions for the electric power industry of each of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, are reported for the most current data year.

Of the 50 States plus the District of Columbia, the electric industry of the State of Virginia ranked 21st highest in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2007. The State's electric industry ranked 16th highest in sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions and 26th highest in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
