Figure 5. U.S. Met Coal Exports Plunge as Domestic Demand Holds

This is a three-item line graph showing tonnages for receipts of imported coal at coke plants, for total coal consumed at coke plants, and for exports of U.S. met coal. The graph covers the period from the first quarter of 1995 through the second quarter of 2001. Imported coal receipts define a very minor amount, relatively level, near the bottom of the graph. Coal consumed at U.S. coke plants declines over the period from more than 8 million to about 7 million short tons per quarter. The statistics changing most significantly are for U.S. met coal exports, which vary between 14 million and 12 million short tons per quarter through 3Q98 then decline rapidly to about 7 million short tons per quarter.
