Figure 4. Coke Plants and Other Industries Are Minor Factors in Historical and Projected Coal Demand

This is a four-item bar graph of historical and projected total demand for U.S. coal versus demand for coke plants, the retail and general industry sectors, and coal exports. The data are annual, running from 1990 through 2020. Each year the total coal demand increases (based mostly on electric power sector demand) while historical and projected demand at coke plants and for coal exports both decline from relatively little to even less. The retail and general industry sectors decline slightly through 2002 then rise slightly and level off. Electricity generation, which generally comprises about 90 percent of total coal consumption–is not plotted because it is already reflected well in the total consumption bars.
