*Quantity is less than 500 short tons.
Notes: Major coal-exporting States are those with total coal exports of over 500,000 short tons in 2000. Totals may not equal sum of components due to independent rounding.
Sources: Tonnages shown for all destinations are estimates based upon information reported on Energy Information Administration Form EIA-6A, "Coal Distribution Report," and coal export data presented in Energy Publishing's COALBASE (Energy Publishing LLC, Knoxville, Tennessee). See the Explanatory Notes for a complete description of the methodology used to develop these estimates. For Pennsylvania coal, the total amount of coal distributed to some destinations may exceed the sum of the reported metallurgical and steam coal shipments because the total includes anthracite coal, which may be used as metallurgical coal or as steam coal. Since the actual use is unknown, anthracite amounts are included in the Pennsylvania and U.S. totals but are not classified as either metallurgical or steam coal.
