For Pennsylvania coal, the total amount of coal distributed to some destinations may exceed the sum of the reported metallurgical and steam coal shipments because the total includes anthracite coal, which may be used as metallurgical coal or as steam coal. Since the actual use is unknown, anthracite amounts are included in the Pennsylvania and U.S. totals but are not classified as either metallurgical or steam coal.
