The Coal Transportation Rate Database (CTRDB) contains electric
utility coal supply contract data and transportation-related data
for investor-owned and interstate utilities with steam-electric
generating stations of more than 50 megawatts, for years 1979 -1995.
Data include coal prices, quality, quantity and origin of
coal purchased under contract and the transportation mode, rate and
distance of contract coal shipments. Data source is the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission's FERC Form 580, "Interrogatory on
Fuel and Energy Purchase Practices." The records in the Coal
Transportation Rate Database represent data as submitted by the
utilities. Some of these records were not included in the analysis
of the EPACT Interim Report on Coal Transportation because their
transportation rates were not in a reasonable range.
This self-extracting zip file expands into two ASCII text files "CTRFLT95.TXT"
and "README1.TXT". To expand the file, type "CTRDB93.EXE" (requires
7 megs space).

The Coal Reserves Database (CRDB) for 1995 contains data on the quantities and quality of resources and recoverable coal in the United States that meet specific criteria of reliability and minability. This public CRDB includes files representing three classes of coal quantities remaining as of the first day of 1995. The first file (EIDRB95.DBF) contains the demonstrated reserve base (DRB), a database of measured and indicated coal resources "in place" (in the ground, undisturbed) and occurring at depths and coalbed thicknesses considered potentially minable. The DRB is presented by State and presumable type of mining (underground or surface) for all coal ranks combined, and is allocated to ranges of heat and sulfur content.
The second file (EIRRSV95.DBF) is a database of the estimated recoverable reserves of U.S. coal, reported by the same categories as the DRB. Estimated recoverable reserves represent coal believed to be recoverable from the DRB and are derived from DRB coal resources by applying State, regional, or local accessibility factors and recovery rates. The third file (EIACTV95.DBF) is based on recoverable coal reserves reported by mine operators for the end of 1994 (deemed equivalent to the first day of 1995). These "recoverable reserves at active mines" are compiled by type of mining and coal rank. EIA estimates ranges of sulfur content for recoverable reserves at active mines using data from coal shipped to electric utilities, industrial customers, and coke plants. In areas with few mines, data from several States may be aggregated to protect confidentiality of individual mine reserve data.
The self-extracting zip file expands into three DBF files and one ASCII "README.TXT" file. To expand the file, type "CRDB95.EXE" (requires 0.5 megs space).
