Figure 3: AVFs Made Available by Fuel Type, 1997-2000: This bar chart shows the number of onroad AFVs made available from 1997 to 2000 by fuel type (i.e., propane, natural gas, alcohol fuels, electricity). In 1997, the number of AFVs capable of using propane as a fuel type was 4,958, natural gas vehicles were 9,446, alcohol-fueled vehicles were 80,895 and electric vehicles were 1,083. In 1998, the number of AFVs capable of using propane as a fuel type rose to 5,620, natural gas vehicles was 10,601, alcohol- fueled vehicles grew to 217,034, and electric vehicles also increased to 1,851. In 1999, the increase continued with propane vehicles rising to 5,955, natural gas vehicles to 13,465, alcohol-fueled vehicles to 426,724, and electric vehicles increased to 2,010. By 2000, however, propane vehicles declined to 4,435, natural gas vehicles also declined to 9,912, alcohol-fueled vehicles continue to rise with 600,832, and electric vehicles sharply increased to 18,172.
