Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (NE) Provides technical leadership to address critical nuclear issues, contribute to energy supply diversity, and advance United States competitiveness and security. The Office provides nuclear products and services that meet the needs of the United States and the world community in a safe, environmentally sound, and economical manner; encourages public involvement in our program; and provides information to increase public knowledge. Office of Policy and International Affairs (PI) The Office of Policy and International Affairs' role is to deliver unbiased advice to the Department of Energy's leadership on existing and prospective energy-related policies, based on integrated and well-founded data and analysis. The Office of Policy and International Affairs has primary responsibility for the Department of Energy's international energy activities including international emergency management, national security, and international cooperation in science and technology. Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (RW) Responsible for the implementation of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) P. L. 97-425, as amended. Provides for the development of repositories for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, including development of interim storage capabilities prior to the availability of a repository for permanent disposal, in a manner that fully protects the public health and safety. Office of Science (SC) Supports a broad spectrum of research in the basic energy sciences, high energy and nuclear physics, magnetic fusion energy, and biomedical and environmental sciences. Carries out a broad range of advisory, coordination, and program management activities related to energy research and development missions. Advises the Secretary on science and technology policy; assesses DOE's research and development programs and serves as focal point for coordination with other agencies in science and technology. SC has oversight responsibilities for three Operations Offices (Chicago, Oakland, and Oak Ridge) and their associated facilities.
